Barack Obama widened his lead considerably over John McCain in four key battleground states during the past three weeks, providing further evidence that the economic crisis has greatly enhanced the Democrat's advantage with just 21 days left before Election Day.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

A majority of voters in each state said McCain had not shown "effective leadership" in dealing with the financial meltdown. Throughout the past several weeks, McCain has condemned financial executives on Wall Street, offered a few proposed remedies for the crisis, and briefly suspended his campaign to return to Washington to take part in White House talks over a $700 billion rescue plan.

Obama has essentially put away the Midwest.  McCain moved some resources from Michigan to Wisconsin (and Pennsylvania), but it doesn't seem to be helping him very much there.  (It doesn't seem to be helping him in Pennsylvania, either, though).  The map has narrowed, essentially to a half dozen Bush states, and those are definitely not the terms on which McCain wants to fight these last 20 days.

Obama overperforms in any state that touches Illionis.  That has been apparent since the primary.  Its a key to his ability to put away Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan in such good stead.  He is the only presidental Democrat to be competetive in Indiana since LBJ to boot.

McCain is weak in his home region.  Right now it looks like the only Southwest state that he is going to win is Arizona (unless you count Texas in the region too)

Yup.  I have a feeling if the Republican candidate was anyone but McCain, Arizona would be in play.  Much like Nevada and Virginia, they're facing changing demographics, and have recently elected Democrats to statewide office.
