People of color appreciate Stuff White People Like because it makes visible the assumed invisibility of a certain type of white culture. In doing so, it opens the door to the admission that, yes, white culture is a distinct, often peculiar, and even varied phenomenon. It is not simply "American culture," or worse, "the culture." I grew up hearing white friends say, "You are so lucky to have a culture," and I remember thinking, "Dude, you have a culture, too."
Often a very funny site.
I think it is a very funny site. One must have a sense of humor and a playful attitude to enjoy it. I can see how many other people that I admire would be offended and hate it just because their personalities make it difficult to relate to this type of humor.
is it racist to tell this person to get over themselves?
i dont see anything wrong with being rich and white or rich and black as long as your not a douscebag
the writer of the article seems a bit miffed at the web site
I think it used to be a funny site. It got less funny once the guy got his book deal.
He's certainly had fewer updates recently. Iʼm hoping he just needs to get back into the swing of things.
Not meaning to horn in but I have a book excerpt here if anyone wants to read it and come back here to discuss it some more. This blog and book are really a phenom, but I don't know if it's going to last more than a year or two.
it doesn't need to last any longer than that, my attention span is about 15 seconds anyway!
I hope this site doesn't mention anything about Hurricane names or White Holes...
They like running marathons and eating sushi, venerating Jon Stewart and bragging about not owning a TV. They talk endlessly about HBO's The Wire and dance self-consciously to '80s music. They're into "irony" and have a tendency to threaten to move to Canada.
"They" are
white peopleNewsviners ....
I thought I was the only one who danced self-consciously to '80s music here! Sounds like someone needs to start a group.
What do you think Calvin would say if we had a White People group? Heh.
Are there any other cultures I can choose from? That doesn't fit me at all.
I don't dance, I've never eaten sushi, I don't like 80s music, I do own a TV but I've never seen the Wire, and it's been a long time since I've run anywhere.
I only look white.
Are there any other cultures I can choose from?
Didn't you already do that? You moved to Turkey!
Hey, good point.
At least I didn't threaten to move to Canada ;-)
Usually when people threaten to do something to resolve an unpalatable situation, they threaten an action they think will make that situation better, not worse. ;-)

Hmmm...I don't do any of those things either... what is the "Wire?"
I live an almost "Bohemian" lifestyle or so I've been told... maybe I belong in France.

You probably belong in a cafe in New York in the 50s, doing opium with Jack Kerouac, listening to some deep jazz...
we're all just slightly removed from our homes...that's how we end up here. Otherwise, we'd be on MySpace.
The French aren't terrible people. The week I spent in Paris I didn't feel any different than the time I spent in Brussels or Cologne.
I don't really fit that stereotype either.
Eh. That blog's lame. I really like sushi and I effectively worship The Wire; I think they ascribe both to some upper class (not me!) liberal thing. Not really into 80's music either but I like Nick Drake and Portishead - which is very white, I'm told.
you know listening to the description its sounds alot more like
"what gay people like"
;)
Real clever, dude. You're really the king of wit.
hehe thank you
nah..your way way to friendly..
Awww. :) Thanks, Teddy-bear.
The French aren't terrible people.
Justin, When I saw the movie "Broken English" I got that impression. It made me want to visit there some day.

not me at all.

hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa best comment on the thread
." I grew up hearing white friends say, "You are so lucky to have a culture," and I remember thinking, "Dude, you have a culture, too."
I agree with this wholeheartedly. I am Cuban by birth. In Maimi I am considered white even though I am Cuban. This correct because I, as many Cubans, am definately white in color. When I moved to Oregon people would say things to me like "Oh us white people this" or "Oh us white people that" and I would look down at my forearm and say "what are you talking about? I'm white, I don't have a trace of an accent and have a larger English vocabulary than you do." All kidding aside, culturally white Americans, like all people, should be proud of their culture. Many of us "people of color" have adopted pieces of your culture that we like, and you can always take a Salsa dancing classes if you feel the need. So raise your lattes in the air and rejoice. I'll be at the next table listening to a podcast of This American Life while drinking a double espresso and munching on a blackberry scone before I go shopping at the Saturday Farmer's market ( I bring my own bags of course) .
Even "white culture" itself is variegated and not monolithic. There are definitely regional "white" cultures across the country.
Excellent point spiffie. Things that southerners do confuse the northerners and likewise. I myself don't see why anyone would want to live in many southern states, but that's just my opinion and I don't like heat. Damned if I didn't get moved to California . . .
There is no way to turn off this heat, and the fire isn't making anything better.
I would say, in my humble opinion, that the two competing interests between the north and the south are efficiency and charm. Washington DC is the place where northern charm meets southern efficiency :)

ROFL thats funny, well done
this blog introduced me to 'the wire' or thanks to tedd riggs:
love stuffwhitepeoplelike for that alone.
never watched the show once....probably the only person in the usa that has not seen it.
Actually, Tedd, I am the other person who has not seen it...
But I am white. At least, last time I checked. Polish doesn't always make it into that club --
Neither does a Norwegian/German/Irish mutt either....
you guys gotta watch it! (there i go, sounding like the blog...) stringer an' them, ahh you'd love it.
they are the tele friends you never knew you were missing till you tune in.
we watched 5 seasons in one go (a month or so)...an absolute marathon.
i found it helped take the edge off my white.
i found it helped take the edge off my white.
That is the funniest thing I've heard all day. :D

Usually I don't have that problem with New Nike Shoes at all, that just seems to happen within moments of walking out the store. Its maddening for what you pay for them to.
my pleasure..
I haven't seen the wire either. Isn't it on a pay channel (Showtime or something)? I can't see me renting a TV show and I can't rationalize paying even more for monthly television just to see one show.
maybe I'm too cheap to be truly white?
The Wire is, actually, very popular among many black people. The fact that white people really like the recently completed HBO show is then I guess some mock I'll Try To Be Cool thing. At least that's the way this blog portrays it.

lol!

Yes, I may have to check out the dvd collection.
It was on HBO - that's why I've never seen it. I get a lot of channels but not the Premium Movie Channels.
we get hbo as free to air in our neck of the woods.
let me say, all 'tans' aside.
this t.v show is the goods.
nothing to do with cool or not, it's just quality television.
Finalcut-
It's on HBO and they are showing it in re-runs these days. Good show.
I think it's sad that so many think that white means having no specific culture, ie bland, generic. What it really means is that they have no idea of their roots or family history. I know white people who if they happen to be Scottish or Welsh or Cornish, have more information about their culture and history than someone who has no clue what their heritage is.
Viva la Poles! Among other things we gave the world the jelly donut. (Paczki (sp?) various pronunciations but ponch-kee and poonch-kee are popular. -- a treat that uses up the last of the jam, sugar, fat etc before Lent starts.)
My impression is that the Midwest is more ethnically aware. You're more likely to know your heritage and something about it than if you live in the Southwest or West. Am I right, or full of it again?
Itʼs kind of like people who insist they don't have an accent. Of course, you have an accent. Everyone has an accent. You might speak with the most common accent for your region, but you still possess an accent of some kind, even if it doesn't seem like it just talking to people of similar origin.
Viva la Poles! Among other things we gave the world the jelly donut.
Yay! We truly are the best! We will be remembered as the Sumerians or Assyrians of our millennium. We gave the world the heliocentric universe, Chopin, radium and cop food.
I maintained that I didn't have an accent. Then I realized that I didn't have a regional accent, but it definitely is an American accent.
i don't have an accent, it's all y'all who have an accent
You might not have an accent mate, but that speal chukker of Newsvine gets very confessed with metre , colour, honour, centre and in the US, cars have trunks, not "boots"
Does th' make sense t'yo' in mah South Car'linan speak?
whuh?
you drive elephants now?
btw..nothing wrong with any of that other spelling.
'cept, what's a 'speal chukker'
oh.... you've been to nie zilland bro?
I don't have an accent in everyday speech but I can turn a subtle one on when necessary to blend in.
Do you think your everyday speech would seem accented to someone from Britain or Australia?
Do you think your everyday speech would seem accented to someone from Britain or Australia?
Yes. My friend from Sri Lanka says he can detect a slight regional dialect in my normal speech. Interestingly enough, I have often been mistaken as having somewhat of a British accent when speaking. I think that just comes from having a mom who taught English for 14 years and also on watching a lot of BBC television.
people from the east coast usa sound more english/irish they seem to drop the rrr's
west coast seem to have ordered extra rrr's with their fries.
those folks in the middle got more hh going on.
I hope this site doesn't mention anything about Hurricane names or White Holes...
Good stuff, Tedd.
I've seen other articles about this site (I even seeded one). It's humorous all right, but it's proprietary about some things that aren't white at all, things that belong to all of humanity.
I'm thinking I gotta do an article on Stuff Polish Girls Like. But am scratching for material here.
White? Okay. I descend for Europeans and have the proverbial stick up my arse when it comes to to expressing myself; I've been trying to extract it but have only halfway succeeded. My wife and I watched "the wire" once on the recommendation of someone else. We haven't subscribe to it any further. Does that make me forever tainted? Oh gosh, please no. I do so want to be as hip as everyone else. I think it is important that "white" people, by one means or another can feel as earthly as anyone else. Our ancestors connected with the earth as much as anyone else's. It is just that European cultures collectively thought it beneficial to disavow such a connection so that some room could be made for some more fantastic one. Is this too off-the-wall? I was trying to get to the one of the streams of though of this dialogue.
3c :yes it does.
I think threecents has a good point about getting back in touch with a root culture as a way of finding or confirming one's identity. Maybe it used to be more popular in the 70's or 80's -- guys going into the woods for a weekend and finding their inner warrior and drumming and stuff. Instead of identifying ourselves as German-American or Hungarian-American or Midwestern or Southern -- we might call ourselves Celtic, Teutonic, Libyan, Nubian, Iberian, Druid, Algonquian, etc.
by the way 3 cents, you know you can get help with that stick problem...sounds painful.
I've gotten too use to the stick. I've decided to keep it.
"It really takes all kinds and if anyone ends up talking its progress. Is this the same second generation tendency of American youth? It is generational, and most of what I've seen teens, young adults, blacks, whites, etc. etc. sequester to get consensus beyond losing battles with no common interest and no culture, language or welcome wagon".
I am white a very proud of it and I believe racism is in people mine and want it to be around it make them feel better when they do not achieve, let blame it an the white people. We all can make a life style that doesn't mean we are bad people. If someone does not like the way I live to bad they do not pay my bills, I do, to many people will not get up off of their backside to make a better life so who should they blame.
I do not watch the wire but I do have HBO and a large TV, it great to be any color life and the way you live is up to you, don't blame other for your mistake in life or the white people because you feel they have more than you. You had the same chance at life and to better your but maybe decide to take the easy way, and now you have nothing.

I have no idea what you're talking about.
I'm guessing it's the white analogue to so-called Ebonics.
I don't really understand being proud of your skins melanin content. It's like being proud of being right handed. Whoopdi-do I'm a whitey righty!
I suppose I could understand being proud of your families history as you are the modern standard-bearer for that clan; but your skin color? Proud? Really?
I'm heavily freckled; should I be proud of my spots or should I be proud of the space between each spot? I'm brown, no red, no that ones pretty close to being black.. oh wait, there is a touch of "white" in there too.. hrm; I'm not sure what level of melanin I should be proud of.
wow, another righty, whitey, spotty, we should join forces and rule the world!
Something about this article hurts my stomach. Thanks for the box, I guess. I am so sick of boxes and categories and classifications. I am totally repulsed, joking or not, by anything that suggests that these cultural boxes are based on consumer goods.
Let's all get naked and run around in the woods!
off you go then...
Anyone with anything better to do than marching up and down the square?
A million inside jokes based on Monty Python... Is that white culture?
I don't think any of the things mentioned in the article are "specifically white" things. Persons of many colors and ethnicties do most, if not all of the things mentioned in the article. I think it's a "certain kind" of person that likes most of these things. It's more of a social connection than a color connection, in my opinion. There are "black yuppies" and "brown yuppies" as well as "white yuppies". I think the guy's just writing about the things he does himself that make him feel "white". Whatever dude. I'm white and some of the things I do and some I don't. I also do a lot more things that bear no relationship to my color or ethnicity. Was it Kierkegaard that once said, "Do not label me, for once you label me, you negate me.." or something like that? I learned that from the movie "Wayne's World", does that make me whiter or darker?
I learned that from the movie "Wayne's World", does that make me whiter or darker?
I think if you bemoan what SNL has become and constantly wish for the days when SNL was funny ("despite Chevy Chase") that makes you whiter.

I quit watching SNL about the same time I quit dropping acid. I guess that's a toss-up then, huh? ( :

I'm commenting on Title. What or who do you mean by "US"?
As I read it, us is anyone.
As far as I'm concerned. If you wear underware, use toilet, drive car, wear shoes, or speak english, you are white.
As far as I'm concerned. If you wear underware, use toilet, drive car, wear shoes, or speak english, you are white.
All definitely random acts of "whiteness"!!! LOL
BAH
Bah?
I wondered how long it would be before the sheeple sector spoke up. Now we know. Welcome, sheeples! Feel free to help yourselves to the salad bar. Or the lawn.
Feel free to help yourselves to the salad bar.
Well I am a vegetarian.
Now white people understand what it feels like to have everything assumed about them before hand.
Clearly I am from another planet...I like Coffee, but I don;t fit that mold too well.
